Lesson Learned: I was captivated by John’s smile from the moment he opened the door to welcome me into his home. He was friendly and talked enthusiastically about his upcoming move. I looked around his tidy house, which had been his home for decades. It was meticulously kept; everything was neatly arranged; nothing was out of place. “I’m ready for an adjustment”, he confided as he described how he had been diligently packing and preparing for this move. It was clear that he was ready both physically and emotionally.
John flashed an even brighter smile when he showed me photos from the days he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and his diploma from the Augustinian College of Villanova. He became even more animated when he volunteered that he will celebrate his 91st birthday on November 1 – All Saints Day. Naturally, I had to inquire what his secret to such longevity was. Without giving it a second thought, he leaned forward from his chair and said very matter-of-factly: “You get to be 91 by doing the things you like”.
Simple and basic. A perfect Pearl of Wisdom!
