Pearl of Wisdom #56: “What can you do?” Sylvia T.

Lesson Learned:  Shining star.  Ray of sunshine.  Tower of strength.  Font of wisdom. This is how I will always remember Sylvia – a very special client, who became a dear friend.

Sylvia was simply remarkable.    She graduated from Temple University’s College of Science and Technology in 1946, where she was trained as a physicist.  Despite her intellect and education in a field dominated by men, she followed the advice of her mother, who encouraged her to fill a more traditional role for a woman – to become a wife and mother.  She was extremely devoted to her family, whom I met during the time of her transition to The Watermark.  Sylvia gladly updated me on what her children were doing and always beamed with pride when she informed me of the achievements of her grandchildren. They were the joy of her life!

Like many others, Sylvia had her share of medical issues that required hospitalization.  Yet, I would often see her walking outdoors with her oxygen tank in tow, getting some exercise.  She was keen on keeping fit.  When I inquired how she was feeling, she would always reply with a smile and a little shrug, “what can you do?”  She would simply go on.  Gently, graciously, courageously.

On August 15, at the age of 91, Sylvia was called home.  I am thankful to have had her in my life these past eight years and blessed that she was my friend.  “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” Marcel Proust
